Greening the Desert

Regenerating Arid Landscapes & Empowering Communities

Greening the Desert is one of the most influential permaculture projects in the world and the beginning of Nadia Abu Yahia Lawton’s lifelong mission to restore land, dignity, and opportunity through nature-based solutions. Founded in Jordan, near Nadia’s birthplace in the Dead Sea Valley, Greening the Desert was created to demonstrate that even the most arid, degraded landscapes can be transformed into lush, productive ecosystems. Using regenerative permaculture design, the project restores soil health, conserves water, increases biodiversity, and produces food in regions long considered uninhabitable for agriculture. What began as a small demonstration site has grown into a globally recognised model for sustainable land restoration in dry climates. The project has inspired farmers, aid organisations, and communities worldwide proving that working with nature, rather than against it, can regenerate ecosystems while improving livelihoods. At its heart, Greening The Desert is about people as much as land. The project was intentionally designed to give back to local communities, particularly in Nadia’s hometown. Through education, training, and hands-on participation, it creates pathways for sustainable development, local employment, and long-term resilience. A key focus of the project is empowering women. By establishing women’s permaculture groups, school gardens, and community training programs, Greening the Desert supports women in gaining skills, independence, and leadership roles within their communities; strengthening families and local economies from the ground up. Greening the Desert stands as a powerful reminder that regeneration is possible anywhere. With thoughtful design, traditional knowledge, and care for both land and people, even the harshest environments can be renewed and communities can thrive in the process.
